Rhea Chakraborty says she likes the name ‘chudail’

What: Rhea Chakraborty was finding her feet in Bollywood when her partner, actor Sushant Singh Rajput died in 2020. In the following months, Rhea found herself in the middle of a media trial, and a social media one as well, where she was often called a ‘chudail’ (witch) and was accused of performing ‘black magic’ on the late actor. At the recent India Today Conclave, when Rhea was asked about the same, she spoke about how back in the day, women who did their own thing and went against patriarchy were seen as witches.

Furthermore: She said, “I kind of like the name chudail. I think it’s interesting . I think back in the day, who was a witch? A witch was a woman who did not subscribe to the patriarchal society or had her own way, or had her own opinions that was against the popular opinion of men and patriarchal societies back then. Maybe I am that person. Maybe I am a chudail.”

We say: We aren’t big fans of Rhea Chakraborty but we do take umbrage at the thought that any woman whodoesn’t fit into the mould is labeled a witch. This isn’t the 17th century where witches were burnt on the stake. Media trial, social media trial or any trials… proclaiming somebody guilty before its even proven is absolutely wrong according to us.
